Projects totaling more than $5 million have been approved by the West Virginia Tourism Commission to receive matching funds from a government program in the amount of $2.5 million through the Matching Advertising Partnership Program (MAPP).

The matching funds are intended to support efforts to promote tourism in West Virginia, and will go towards a number of projects across the state. For example, the CVB of Marion County's 2010-2011 project will include a mix of print and Internet as well as a consumer show to market Marion County as a premier location for group tours, meetings, and vacations. The campaign is designed to promote the abundance of cultural, heritage and outdoor recreation opportunities that the area has to offer in order to increase the length of stay and appeal to a wiser audience.

West Virginia is known as the Mountain State, and a recent campaign to promote tourism in West Virginia has been touting it as being "Wild and Wonderful." While this might seem surprising to some who never considered West Virginia to be a particularly wild or exotic destination, there is more to it then meets the eyes. West Virginia is certainly a naturally beautiful state with a lot of culture to enjoy as well. One of its historical towns, Harpers Ferry, is like a town frozen in time.

The town has created museums and exhibits right inside its old homes and buildings, so that when you open the door to go inside you're stopped by a Plexiglas door or corded entrance from which you can observe the artifacts of a bygone era. There are also various outfitters in Harpers Ferry that offer whitewater rafting, canoeing, tubing and zip lining for the more adventurous travelers.

A fun musical event at the Natural Tunnel State Park in Duffield is the Candlelight Series featuring Sigean (Irish traditional music). The Wilderness Road State Park in Ewing features daily activities including docu-drama and interpretative programs. And just across the border in Elizabethton, TN you can visit the Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area, where they offer traditional arts workshops, storytelling, concerts, tours, exhibitions, workshops and more.
